As a larger body, the apparel industry is not an environmentally friendly one. It is one of the most significant contributors to environmental damage and it takes its toll on human lives as well.

Sustainable fashion describes a movement that is working towards righting some of these wrongs while still producing fashionable, stylish garments people want to wear. But how are we making a difference, and how can you be a part of that difference when you choose to buy and wear sustainable fashions.

When creating the ReverseMoi Collection, Tallmoi founder Bukola Bankole and her team focused on creating clothing that was as 'slow' as possible. By slow we mean that they last, are versatile, and double your closet without the need for a 'double purchase'.

Globally the apparel industry emits an alarming amount of greenhouse gases every year, wastes a huge amount of water, destroys habitats the world over, actively contributing significantly to global warming.

One reason is that the majority of 'fast fashion' apparel offerings are simply not created to last, or even to be worn often.

Americans buy five times as much clothing now as we did in 1980. We don’t keep most of that clothing, though. According to The Atlantic, Americans send 10.5 million tons of clothing to landfills every year.

 

The ReverseMoi Mission

There was a time, however, when the American woman focused her clothing purchases on high quality, versatile items that could be 'dressed up or down' as the occasion suited, and worn for all kinds of occasions. In her excellent book Overdressed, Elizabeth Cline writes: “In 1930, the average American woman owned an average of nine outfits. Today, we each buy more than 60 pieces of new clothing on average per year.”

In that old model, consumers had a wardrobe of clothing. They would take care of that wardrobe and add to it sparingly. Clothing was an investment. In 1900, Americans spent 20% of their income on apparel, but owned far fewer items of clothing. By 2003, Americans were spending 4% of their income on clothing, but buying much more of it. Today, the economics of clothing is all about volume. Which is damaging the environment in ways that may be hard to reverse.

The Reversemoi Collection seeks a return to those simpler times, for the sake of the environment as much as for the pocketbook. The collection is based around the idea that one, high quality, beautifully tailored, piece is essentially two garments. You can choose to wear our Michelle Reversible Plaid Modern Bootcut Pants, for example, either in their solid color form - accented by a colorful top perhaps - for a casual evening out after having worn them in their check form with a clean, crisp white shirt at the office. And the same holds true of the entire collection.
